A Historical Bedtime Story for Progressive, Liberal, Socialist Democrats: The National Guard, Martial Law and Military Tribunals in a Small Texas Town in 1929
DEAR PROGRESSIVE, LIBERAL, SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS:
Please Read the Following, then try to connect this story to your personal political rendition of "keeping the law."
"In the late 1920's the Texas Rangers and the Texas National Guard were deployed to Borger, Texas.
The Texas Rangers acted as a paramilitary police force, raiding gambling halls, destroying stills, and arresting fugitives, but they could not fully uproot the entrenched corruption in the local government and police force.
When the violence climaxed with the assassination of District Attorney John A. Holmes on September 18, 1929, Governor Dan Moody escalated the response by sending in what has been described as a "full military occupation force," consisting mostly of the Texas National Guard. Martial Law was declared. Under martial law, the National Guard effectively took over the town. They disarmed local deputies, forced the resignation of the corrupt mayor and police chief, and established a military tribunal system to restore civil order."
UPSHOT: (which I am providing, because I know some of you will not "get it" otherwise)
The above happened in one town, a little more than 100 years ago. I was born in that town in 1951, a scant 22 years after the above event. I left Borger in 1974, but many of my friends and relatives remain there. Neither I or anyone my age or younger ever experienced anything like the above story while growing up in Borger. Why? Because the Governor of the State of Texas had the good sense to recognize that the local government, including the police force, was too corrupt to care for its own citizens. These kinds of actions by state governments were not uncommon in the 1800's through the early to mid-1900's.
Are you listening Chicago? Nashville? Los Angeles? Minnesota? Portland? Clean up your act, or President Trump, who was raised in roughly the same period as I, will "clean it up for you." You have been very fortunate that President Trump has restrained himself and has not declared Martial Law in your Blue-blood-stained cities. Historical records indicated that Martial Law was pretty tough on the little town of Borger, Texas, back in the day. But those same historical records speak to how the honest, upright citizens were so very grateful for the intervention. So, put up or shut up when the National Guard arrives in your city or town to protect your law-abiding citizens from their own local governments and law enforcement.
